Blog Tour, Excerpt & (ARC) Book Review (460): The Closer You Come (The Original Heartbreakers #1) - Gena Showalter

The Closer You Come (The Original Heartbreakers #1)

Publication: 31st March 2015
Publisher: HQN Books
Pages: 400
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age Appropriate: Adult
New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter introduces the Original Heartbreakers, where three not-quite-reformed bad boys are about to meet the women who will bring them to their knees.

Just released from prison, Jase Hollister has a dark and twisted past. And now, he has only one goal: stay out of trouble. Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, sounds like the perfect place for him and his two brothers-by-circumstance to settle down and live a nice, simple life. But model citizen isn’t exactly this rugged bachelor’s default setting—especially when it comes to a certain hot-blooded Southern beauty…

Brook Lynn Dillon has always been responsible. Not that it’s done her much good. The down-on-her-luck waitress is broke, single and fun-deprived. Until Jase comes along. He is dangerous, stunningly protective, breathtakingly sexy and as tempting as sin, and the passion sizzling between them is undeniable. But can it melt her resistance? After all, the right kind of trouble might be just what they both need.
My Thoughts.
I have long been a fan of Gena's and her writing, of course we all know how fantastic her paranormal romance novels are, I adore her Lords Of The Underworld series, so when I got the chance to join up to the blog tour for The Closer You Come to read and write a review I jumped at the chance. I was extremely intrigued to see how well she could pull of writing a contemporary romance and let me just say she aced it!

I made sure to read the prequel novella first The One You Want which helped to familiarise myself with the couple Kenna and Dane who appeared in this book a few times, Kenna was Brooke Lynn's best-friend and I really enjoyed their story, Jase also appeared towards the end of the novella so I had already been introduced to his character and because of this I was really interested to discover why he'd spent the last nine years in prison.

I picked up The Closer You Come with a sense of excitement and anticipation for the story, characters and the wonder that is Gena's writing, I knew I was going to enjoy this, she has a way of writing in any genre it seems and just nailing it, the story of Brooke Lynn and Jase's romance made for an intense and thrilling read, the devastating history of Jase's childhood and incarceration was so sad and heartbreaking, knowing that because of all he'd been through he thought that he wasn't worthy of anything good in his life, not even the chance to find happiness and someone to love and have them love him in return, believing that no one would ever be able to see beyond the fact that he was an ex-con, that was before Brooke Lynn entered his life, as much as he tried to fight it Jace found himself falling for her hard, and she for him.

But of course their way to a happily ever after was never going to be smooth sailing, with misunderstandings, disagreements and self preservation aplenty throughout, Jace and Brooke Lynn sure do have their work cut out for them, add in a cast of fun and interesting supporting characters and you have yourself a delightfully, entertaining read that will leave you wanting more.

I'm anxiously awaiting the next couple of books which will focus on Jase's two best-friends West and Brent and also Brooke Lynn's sister Jessie Kay, I'm pretty sure their stories will be as captivating as this one was.

I would recommend this book to everyone who likes their contemporary romances hot and steamy, hard to put down and with a plot that will be sure to keep you on your toes.

I give this 5/5 stars.

EXCERPT ONE:

“Pay attention, honey,” Jase said to Brook Lynn. “This isn’t a lesson you’ll want to learn twice. You throw a tantrum in my room, you get wet.” Jase tossed the little wildcat into the deep end, hoping to calm her down.
Jessie Kay beat at his arm, screeching, “Idiot! Her implants aren’t supposed to be waterlogged. She’s supposed to cover them with a special adhesive.”
Please. “Implants are always better wet.” He should know. He’d handled his fair share.
“They aren’t in her boobs, you moron. They’re in her ears!”
Well, hell. I’m on silent, she’d said, the words suddenly making sense. “Way to bury the lead,” he muttered.
Brook Lynn came up sputtering. She swam to the edge of the pool and climbed out with her sister’s help, then arranged her hair over her ears before glaring up at him, reminding him of an avenging angel.
He’d hoped the impromptu dunk would lessen her appeal.
He’d hoped in vain.
Water droplets trickled down flawless skin the color of melted honey. The plain white button-up and black slacks she wore clung to her body, revealing a breathtakingly erotic frame, legs that were somehow a mile long, breasts that were a perfect handful…and nipples that were hard.
Those traits, in themselves, would have been dangerous for any man’s peace of mind. But when you paired that miracle body with that angel face—huge baby blues and heart-shaped lips no emissary from heaven should ever be allowed to have—it was almost overkill.
Damn, I picked the wrong sister.
Well, what was done was done. Another piece of broken glass in his conscience. Another memory to leave a sticky film on his soul, like a spider determined to catch flies.
“I’m sorry about your hearing aids, or whatever they are,” he said, “but catfights aren’t allowed in my room. You should save all disputes for the next JELL-O Fight Night.”
She watched his lips. Her eyes narrowed, an indication she’d understood him.
Without looking away from him, she said, “Jessie Kay, get in the car. If I have to start counting again, you’ll regret it.”
For the first time that evening, her sister heeded her command and took off as though her feet were on fire.
West and Beck arrived a second later and scoped out the scene: a gorgeous woman who was soaking wet, probably chilled, stood as still as a statue, her hands fisted at her sides, while Jase couldn’t seem to look away from her.
“What the hell happened?” Beck demanded, running a hand through his hair.
“This is between him and me.” Brook Lynn pointed to Jase. “You guys go inside.”
“Your hand is bleeding.” West frowned and reached for her.
“I’m not your concern.” She stepped away, avoiding contact, and would have toppled back into the pool if Jase hadn’t caught her arm.
With her sex kitten curves, he was surprised by the slenderness of her bones. Even more shocked by the soft silk of her skin, the warmer than melted honey temperature. She wasn’t chilled, after all, and the longer he held on, the more electric the contact proved to be, somehow cracking through the armor he’d spent years erecting around his emotions, until he practically vibrated with the desire to touch all of her…to hold her…
To devour.
What the hell?
He released her with a jolt and widened the distance between them. His inner armor wasn’t something he maintained just for grins and giggles. It was for survival. As a boy abandoned by his parents and sometimes mistreated by fosters, he’d learned emotions were a weakness that could be used against him. To feel something for a person or object meant he’d placed value on it—whether for good or ill.
Feel nothing. Want nothing. Need nothing. For the most part, the motto had served him well. There had been times the armor vanished, the darkest of emotions consuming him…pushing him to do things he shouldn’t. Trouble had always followed.

Tear You Apart (Beau Rivage)

Publication: 27th January 2015
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Pages: 384
Genre: Fantasy/Fairytale Retelling
Age Apprropriate: Young Adult
There are so many reasons why I adore not only this book but the whole series, I really enjoy reading fairytale retellings no matter the fairytale I will pick it up and read it, also having this book compared to the tv shows Once Upon A Time and Grimm which I both love to watch made it almost a 100% guarantee that I was going to thoroughly enjoy this book, and enjoy it I did.

Having read and reviewed the first book Kill Me Softly and giving it five stars I was already familiar with the authors writing style and enjoyed it.

What I love most about these books are the twists that are made on these classic fairytale characters, the family situation with Viv's (Snow White) fated Prince Charming Jasper was genius, it definitely added another layer to the fairytale we have all grown to love.

The character of Viv added a whole new depth to the Snow White character, a Princess who doesn't want her pre-destined Prince Charming and instead wants to be with her on-off boyfriend Henley who happens to be The Huntsman in this tale and who is given the task of killing Viv by her evil Stepmother Regina.

With a sprinkling of fairytale characters throughout there is never a dull moment, you can't ever go wrong with a fairytale retelling written by Sarah Cross.

I hope there will be more companion novels added to this series, I'm eager for more.

I give this 5/5 stars.

Blog Tour: Book Review (399): The Bodies We Wear (The Bodies We Wear #1) - Jeyn Roberts

The Bodies We Wear (The Bodies We Wear #1)

Publication: 23rd September 2014
Publisher: Knopf Books For Young Readers
Pages: 368
Genre: Dystopian/Paranormal/Contemporary
Age Appropriate: Young Adult

A streetwise girl trains to take on a gang of drug dealers and avenge her best friend’s death in this thriller for fans of Scott Westerfeld and Robin Wasserman.

People say when you take Heam, your body momentarily dies and you catch a glimpse of heaven. Faye was only eleven when dealers forced Heam on her and her best friend, Christian. But Faye didn’t glimpse heaven—she saw hell. And Christian died.

Now Faye spends her days hiding her secret from the kids at school, and her nights training to take revenge on the men who destroyed her life and murdered her best friend. But life never goes the way we think it will. When a mysterious young man named Chael appears, Faye's plan suddenly gets a lot more complicated. Chael seems to know everything about her, including her past. But too many secrets start tearing her world apart: trouble at school, with the police, and with the people she thought might be her friends. Even Gazer, her guardian, fears she's become too obsessed with vengeance. Love and death. Will Faye overcome her desires, or will her quest for revenge consume her?
My Thoughts.
The Bodies We Wear is ultimately a story about revenge, of Faye who at the age of eleven was forced to take the drug Heam, which shuts your body down for a brief time, almost deathlike, if you're lucky you live or the other outcome is death, whilst under this drug high you purportedly glimpse heaven.

This is not so for Faye who sees hell and believes that's where she's headed, when her best-friend Christian is also forced to consume the drug he is not so lucky and he dies, vowing to avenge his death she's spent the last six years learning to fight and trailing her assailants of that fateful night all those years ago, so that when the time comes she'll kill them all.

It's while out keeping tabs on the ringleader Rufus one night that she meets Chael, a good looking guy her age who seems familiar, he also seems to know an awful lot about her, and when we find out why that is, it will shock you completely, and will change the direction of the story we thought we were getting.

Living with her guardian Gazer, she attends school on a scholarship, but people like Faye who have overdosed on Heam are ostracised, and although the school forbids the students from knowing anything about her, they have rules she has to follow including no fraternising with other students or else she will be kicked out, and with no other school willing to take her, she needs to be on her best behaviour at all times, to graduate and prove to the faculty that just because she overdosed doesn't mean she can't try to make something of herself.

This was a very interesting and captivating story, almost like a dystopian with its world under the grip of the Heam epidemic with no law enforcement able to control the dealers or stop the distribution of the drug, with a smidgeon of paranormal all set in a contemporary setting.

I'm excited to see where this series goes, once you pick this book up it's almost as addictive as Heam, and way too hard to put down, very, very enjoyable.

I give this 4/5 stars.

Blog Tour: (ARC) Book Review (367): Ugly Love - Colleen Hoover

Ugly Love

Publication: 5th August 2014
Publisher: Atria Books
Pages: 336
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age Appropriate: New Adult
#1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover returns with a new heart-wrenching love story.

When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she doesn't think it's love at first sight. They wouldn't even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn't want love, she doesn't have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.

Never ask about the past.
Don't expect a future.

They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can't handle it at all.

Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.
My Thoughts.
The feels...the feels... OMG the feels....

Reading this book felt like Colleen Hoover had torn my heart out and stomped all over it, I sort of had a niggling suspicion of what had happened to Miles six years ago but to read and confirm what I had thought was just devastating.

Colleen's books have a way of pulling at my heartstrings, Hopeless and Losing Hope were two books that did just that, I didn't think that she could do it again, boy was I wrong!

This story told in dual perspectives of Tate and Miles was so well done, we have our heroine Tate who has moved in with her older brother Corbin, the day she moves in she comes across a drunk and passed out guy sitting against her new apartment door, that's our first introduction to Miles, we do eventually find out what got him so drunk that day *sob* but I won't ruin it for anybody.

The attraction and chemistry is hot between these two, but six years ago something happened to Miles that changed his life forever and turned him into the man he is today, unwilling to love or to be close to anybody, which brings me to his perspective his are told from six years ago, and each chapter comes closer to explaining the terribly devastating incident that made him into the shell of the boy he used to be.

They both decide to be friends with benefits, without the friends part, just sex, Miles tells Tate not to ask about his past and too never expect any kind of future with him.

But against her better judgement Tate finds herself falling for Miles, but his rules are clear, and although in the back of her mind she may be hoping that Miles will change his mind and come to care for her too, she knows this won't last forever and she'll need to break things off before she falls too deep in love with him.

Colleen has a way of creating characters that end up being unforgettable, Miles is one of those characters, damaged and in so much pain that you can't help but empathise with him and hope that he can eventually accept the past and move on, be happy and to live again.

Obviously this is one book that I will be recommending to everybody, this is up there with my other favorite books of Colleen's Hopeless and Losing Hope, do you see the pattern, the books that I love most of hers are the one's that shatter me the most and leave me bawling like a baby

A fantastic book that I cannot praise enough.

I give this a huge 5/5 stars.

Colleen Hoover's love for writing began in 1985 when she was five years old. Her first story was titled "Mystery Bob" and was a huge hit with her mother, who was really good at faking interest.
Colleen continued to write short stories for friends and family until December of 2011, when she decided to write a long story she titled, "Slammed." She self-published SLAMMED to Amazon in January, 2012 and it hit the NYT's bestsellers list in May, 2012. She has since signed with Atria Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, and now has six NYT's bestsellers. Colleen prefers to be called a writer, as the term "author" still terrifies her and makes this feel like a job with expectations. She doesn't work well under pressure and hopes writing will always remain fun and exciting.
Colleen's newest novel, UGLY LOVE, releases August 5th, 2014. She is currently working on a new novel, CONFESS, which she is writing as fast as she can before she wakes up from this crazy dream.
You can follow Colleen on Instagram and Twitter @colleenhoover. You can also find her on her blog at www.colleenhoover.com where she holds a daily book-a-day giveaway, or on her very active Facebook page at www.facebook.com/authorcolleenhoover where she loves to give away more free stuff when her husband isn't looking.
Colleen also wants the world to know that writing short biographies in third person is incredibly awkward.

Find out when Ashley falls back to earth and lands in a city full of surprises – Hollywood, California. Hollywood Angels is the sequel to Amateur Angel by Karri Thompson.
My Thoughts.
I really loved the first book, and was so excited to take part in this blog tour, I was really anxious to see what was going to happen next after the ending of the first book, unfortunately while I did like it, I didn't love it as I'd hoped to.

I found that Cannon whom was Ashley's first job/charge as a Guardian Angel in Amateur Angel and who I loved was just extremely annoying and whiny in this book and it got to the point where I hated every scene he was in which was mostly all of them.

I did enjoy reading about the new charge Brendan that Ashley was responsible for. including the brief appearances of fellow Guardian Angel Will (aka: William Shakespeare), and with the new Guardian Angel that Ashley is teaching who is the Angel for Brendan's twin brother Bradley, the storyline of two former child stars making a comeback with a movie, took us behind the scenes of movie sets and the goings on of filming a movie I found interesting.

It was a quick fast read and I recommend fans of the first book to pick this up.

I give this 3/5 stars.

Teaser
When Cannon’s lips parted, sending his tongue to meet with mine, I thought I was going to faint. Without a beating heart, without a chest to heave with heavy breaths, my body tingled instead, sending wave after wave of sweet shivers throughout my entire being. His hands were warm against my back, the dewy skin of his face hot against mine when his lips left their mark to kiss my neck just below my ear. I tilted my head, sending a cascade of chestnut locks against my wings. “Ashley, you have no idea how much I want you right now – all of you.” Cannon’s voice was deeper than a whisper but soft, muffled against the inside collar of my robe. “I want you too, Cannon.” I said without the inconvenience or interruption of having to catch my breath between kisses. As our kissing continued, Cannon’s grip upon me became heavier and desperate. I pulled him closer in return, wanting him to press hard against me, giving in to our emotions. My wings were tight, aching against my back. Cannon’s wings were firm, pulsing as his muscles flexed.

AMATEUR ANGEL, was released on May 1, 2012.  The second book in the series,HOLLYWOOD ANGELS, followed on October 21, 2013, and a third book will eventually round out the series.

MIRROR X, the first book in my new trilogy, THE VAN WINKLE CHRONICLES, launches in 2014 with Entangled Publishing.

I grew up in San Diego County and attended San Diego State University, earning a bachelor's degree in English, a master's degree in education, and my teaching credential. I'm a high-school English teacher in the East County of San Diego where I also live with my husband, John, our son, and two dogs. Earning a Ph.D. in English and teaching at the college level are on my bucket list.

Being a lover of Victorian literature, my favorite author is Charles Dickens although I haven't quite finished reading all of his books. Someday I'll finally finish David Copperfield - I promise. If you are one of my students, you are either laughing or shaking your head at this.

In my free time, I like to jog, ski, and travel. After a recent trip with my family to Germany, I have plans for a new YA romance, and I'm hoping our upcoming 2014 trip to Ireland will also inspire another romance novel.

I lead a very busy life, but when I'm not teaching, grading papers, or attending my son's football games and tennis matches, I find time to write novels, my greatest passion.

ught sight to Brielle. Another offers sweet relief from what she sees.
Carrying straight on from the edge of your seat finale of the second book Broken Wings, this book was the perfect ending for this series, there is nothing that I would change.
So we say goodbye to Brielle, Jake and Canaan as we come to the final battle, Brielle comes face to face with the Prince Of Darkness, where she is given a dark halo (hence the title), which will stop her from seeing the celestial, tempted by the thought of living a normal life and being free of the constant nightmares, but is it worth it knowing that accepting the halo may come with a price?
Meanwhile a lot of truths come to light of all the hidden secrets various characters have been hiding.
Every character's storylines are tied up, and in the last chapter we even get a glimpse four years in the future which lets us see what has happened to our favourite characters, which was a great touch.
This is a really great series, I look forward to more books from Shannon in the future, I'll definitely be picking them up.
Highly recommended, give this series a go.

Blog Tour: Shudder (Stitch Trilogy #2) - Samantha Durante/Guest Post & Book Review (250).

Welcome to my stop on the Shudder Blog Tour, I'm excited to take part.
The Guest Post is situated after the review.

Shudder (Stitch Trilogy #2)

Publication: 15th June 2013
Publisher: Self Published
Pages: 348
Genre: Science-Fiction/Dystopian
Age Appropriate: Young Adult
Buy It: Amazon  Barnes & Noble
It's only been three days, and already everything is different.

Paragon is behind her, but somehow Alessa's life may actually have gotten worse. In a wrenching twist of fate, she traded the safety and companionship of her sister for that of her true love, losing a vital partner she'd counted on for the ordeal ahead. Her comfortable university life is but a distant memory, as she faces the prospect of surviving a bleak winter on the meager remains of a ravaged world. And if she'd thought she'd tasted fear upon seeing a ghost, she was wrong; now she's discovering new depths of terror while being hunted by a deadly virus and a terrifying pack of superhuman creatures thirsting for blood.

And then there are the visions.

The memory-altering "stitch" unlocked something in Alessa's mind, and now she can't shake the constant flood of alien feelings ransacking her emotions. Haunting memories of an old flame are driving a deep and painful rift into her once-secure relationship. And a series of staggering revelations about the treacherous Engineers - and the bone-chilling deceit shrouding her world's sorry history - will soon leave Alessa reeling...

The second installment in the electrifying Stitch Trilogy, Shudder follows Samantha Durante's shocking and innovative debut with a heart-pounding, paranormal-dusted dystopian adventure sure to keep the pages turning.

My Thoughts.

Shudder is the second book in the Stitch Trilogy by Samantha Durante, I was a part of the blog tour for the first book Stitch (find my review here), which I absolutely loved, so when I was asked to take part in the blog tour for Shudder I jumped at the chance.

Set just three days after the finale of the first book and Alessa and Isaac are scouting for a new base for the Rebels to abide while they plan their attack on Paragon.

Along the way it's anything but a smooth journey, having to contend with creatures that are out to kill them, Alessa suffering from debilitating thoughts and feelings of people before they died, that render her at times immobile, and also the chance that they could both contract the deadly virus that killed the vast majority of the worldwide population.

Interspersed throughout we have a couple of separate storylines going on as well, a girl with amnesia given the name Phoenix in hospital visited by the members of the Ruling Class, explaining to her the history of how Paragon came to be, and their involvement and reasons for why they did the things the way they did, but do they have ulterior motives behind these visits?

We also follow the story of a teenage boy and girl who are being held prisoner in the Paragon prison and their interaction with each other whilst jailed there.

Of course just like the first book, Shudder has an ending that will have you desperate to get your hands on the next book Stuck.

I look forward to continuing on with this series, and to see what else is in store for us readers.

I give this 3.5/5 Stars.

Haven’t read the first book in the series? Check it out on Amazon and Goodreads.  Just $0.99!

Guest Post.
Guest Post: Celebrating the Stitch 1-Year Anniversary by Samantha Durante, author of the Stitch Trilogy

Wow.  Has it really been a year already??

One year ago today I kicked off the blog tour for my first ever book, Stitch (Stitch Trilogy, Book 1), and even 365 days later, it’s still kind of surreal.  I wrote a book?  And people read it??  So I’m really an author???

And now, almost 10 weeks into the Shudder Blog Tour, I still can’t quite believe that I’ve written two books, and even more people have read them, and said people are now asking me where the third one is (it’s coming, I promise!).

It’s been quite the year – that much is for sure.  Not only did I finally achieve a lifelong dream of publishing a book, but in the same 12 months, I also got married, bought a house, and, oh – got pregnant with my first child (due in Oct!).  So lots of change going on in my life, but all good things as well.  :-)

Looking at my life today, I have to say that I’m quite content.  If I can just manage to continue doing the things I’m doing today – writing, raising a family, loving my husband and family and friends, and just generally enjoying each day as it comes – I will be a very happy girl for many years to come.

But it wasn’t always an easy road to get here.  It required (like anything else) a little sacrifice, a lot of hard work, and healthy dash of blind faith that if I just follow my heart, everything will work out the way it’s supposed to.  So what have I learned in my journey?  Here are the top three lessons:

1. Do what you love.  I know, I know – people say this all the time.  Easier said than done.  It took me years (like 25 years!) to even realize *what* it is that I love to do (write).  So I know how difficult this sounds, and I’m not going to lie, it takes a lot of introspection, listening to the people around you, following your gut even when it’s scary, and just a bit of dumb luck to figure this out.

But I can also promise you this – if you manage to find a way to make your passions your life instead of just trying to squeeze them into your life, you will be infinitely happier.  Because suddenly, you’ll look forward to what you have to do every day, even when it’s stressful.  I still spend plenty of time agonizing over how much stuff I need to write, but when I sit down and actually do it, all that stress magically disappears.  I lose myself in the work, because I truly enjoy it.  And I can’t say that about any other job I’ve ever held.

2. Take risks.  Okay, this one is even scarier.  But the fact of the matter is, it HAS to be done.  You will never move forward in your life if you don’t just suck it up and go for what you want.  Once you’ve figured out what you love to do, you need to make those things a priority, and you can’t let yourself make excuses.

A few years ago, I knew three things: 1. I wanted to live closer to my family again, 2. I wanted to start my own family and have a flexible enough lifestyle to be able to stay home with my kids, and 3. I wanted to write again, something I hadn’t spent much time doing since I was a kid.  So what did I have to do to make that happen?  Drop my entire life and move across the country, which included leaving a secure six-figure career in software engineering and convincing my then-boyfriend (now husband) to leave his secure six-figure software engineering job, and then find us both new jobs, which in my case meant starting a business in a field I had absolutely no credentials in and did not know if I could succeed at.

I’m not going to lie – it was scary.  And it didn’t help that every person I told about my plans clearly thought I was crazy.  But I had to do it – I had to try, or I would have been stuck in a wonderful life that I could never truly enjoy because it wasn’t the life I wanted.  So I repeated to myself as a mantra, “What’s the worst that could happen?” and just went for it.

And you know what?  It was the best thing I ever did.  Did everything work out exactly as planned?  Definitely not – there were some serious hurdles along the way, and points at which I wasn’t sure it was going to work out at all.  But in the end, it was all okay.  Sure, I took a $50k+ pay cut.  But all of a sudden I had something much more valuable: time, to do with what I want – to write, to be with my family, to live – and I was happier, healthier, and for the first time in my life, content.  From there on, everything else just came together.  But only because one day I said, “Damn the consequences,” and decided to take a risk.

3. Reevaluate, and break the rules as needed.  Things change – life changes.  Don’t be afraid to stop and take a look at where you are and reassess whether your choices are still working for you.  The hardest part about doing this is managing other people’s expectations – you’ve laid out a plan, taken some risks to get there, and now you feel like you need to stick to it.  But don’t pigeonhole yourself into doing something that’s not right for you anymore.  Sometimes you need to evolve with the world around you.

In my case, I didn’t actually set out to become an author.  Writing books was more of a fantasy for me than anything – I didn’t really ever think I’d do it, but it was just something that I kept on the backburner, in case I “ever had time to try.”  When I started, I thought my writing career would be 50% technical/business writing (to pay the bills) and 50% fun journalistic magazine-type writing (to give me something creative that I would enjoy doing).

Turns out, I never did any magazine writing.  I didn’t care to badly enough to put in the time to get those types of jobs, and the business writing ended up being less technical, more fun, and more plentiful than I expected.  So I built a business doing that.  And then one day, I realized I actually did have time to try my hand at a novel, and I started writing Stitch.  But I wasn’t sure enough about it to invest the years needed to succeed in the traditional publishing path, so instead I broke a few rules and self-published, managing my writing career as my own agent/editor/publisher/publicist/etc.  Even though at the time that wasn’t the way things are *usually* done, it worked for me, so I did it.  (And now it’s becoming a lot more common for other people, too!)

After that experience, I realized that it wasn’t business writing or magazines that I was interested in – I actually wanted to write books for a living!  So now I’m running my business and simultaneously working on building a career as an author.  I’m hoping to someday be able to shift my “work” to 90% books and 10% business writing (just enough to keep my name out there so that if I ever needed to, I could quickly go back to work full-time).  But I’m not quite there yet.

And you know what?  That’s okay.  I’m evolving.  Things are changing.  And who knows, maybe once this baby shows up life is going to throw me a curveball.  And if it does, here’s what I’ll do: figure out what I want to do, take some risks and break some rules to make it happen, then reevaluate.  Because if there’s anything the past year has taught me, it’s that that works.

So here’s to Stitch’s One Year Anniversary, and to all the bumps and bruises along the way that made this day a reality.  I hope you find your “Stitch” too – and when you do, don’t let anything stand in your way.

About Samantha

As an avid lifelong reader of fiction of all sorts, there’s nothing I find more engrossing than an epic sci-fi/fantasy/romance series. I’ve whiled away countless weekends of my life immersed in richly-woven worlds that someone else was kind enough to put on paper, and I’ve always felt a debt of gratitude to these wonderful authors – J.K. Rowling, Stephanie Meyer, Suzanne Collins, Christopher Paolini, Sharon Shinn, C.S. Lewis, Jane Austen, and most recently Lauren Oliver and Veronica Roth, to name a few.
The Stitch Trilogy – my very debut series – is my humble attempt to return the favor. My dream is to bring the same enjoyment and delight to readers that these authors have brought to my life. If you find yourself staying up just a little too late to finish another chapter, or sneaking into the bathroom at work to read when things are slow, I will know I have done my job!
I currently live in Westchester County, New York with the two loves of my life – my husband, Sudeep, and my cat, Gio. In addition to penning novels, I am also a freelance business writer and communications consultant at my company, Medley Media Associates.
Prior to pursuing my passion for writing full time, I spent three years in software engineering at Microsoft and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Jerome Fisher Program in Management & Technology, where I studied Systems Engineering, Management, Entrepreneurship, and Operations & Information Management at Penn Engineering and Wharton business school.  I was also valedictorian of Brewster High School in Brewster, NY, class of 2003.
I love to hear from readers! I do my best to answer each and every email I receive, so please don’t hesitate to send me comments, questions, or even suggestions for what you’d like to see in future books.  You can also find me on Facebook at my author and Stitch Trilogy fan pages, onGoodreads and Twitter, and on my Amazon Author page.
