Book Review (478): Broken (Broken #1) - Annie Jocoby

Broken (Broken #1)

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age Appropriate: New Adult

Nick O'Hara is a veritable womanizer. The only qualifications that he looks for in a romantic connection is that the person is hot and breathing. Mainly hot. He has no desire for an emotional connection with another person, and that's the way he lives his life. He has his fabulous wealth and his reputation as a premiere architect, and that's enough for him.

Until Scotty James.

Scotty is a graduate student at Columbia University in New York City. She's broken from traumatic experiences from her years in foster care and homelessness. She has a vulnerability that is intoxicating to Nick, because, deep down, he knows that he is as broken as she.

When Nick pursues Scotty, it seems that she is the only woman who doesn't want to be with him. At first she's a challenge, but Nick soon finds himself falling in love for the first time in his life. With a woman who wants nothing to do with him.

Can Scotty overcome her trust issues and fear to let Nick in? Or will she prove to be too broken to trust?
My Thoughts.
The synopsis of Broken is what initially drew me to this book, I love reading stories where the main male lead is a well reknowned manwhore who is drawn to one specific woman and that's it, no other female matters and he knows his days of sleeping around are gone, he's found 'the one' and now he just needs to convince her of that.

This is what happens to Nick, you know you're usual hot, rich, sex obsessed lead who finds a quiet, gorgeous woman in this case Scotty who's hiding a secret that has affected her relationships with men and for good reason, she's a student in his architectural class, he is the professor, Nick just can't seem to get Scotty out of his mind and so hires her as his intern at the highly successful architectural firm he works at, with a spiteful and vengeful co-worker he slept with making her time there hell, Scotty is determined to stick it out, desperate for the money the internship brings in.

So I was really enjoying the story and Nick's character until around the 74% mark that's when although he was in love with Scotty, (something tragic in her past was keeping her from being the kind of girlfriend he wanted which is understandable given what she went through), he sleeps with a woman he met through a friend and spends the weekend with her, when he starts back at work the next week and hears gossip that Scotty went out with a guy from work, just as friends, he immediately assumes the worst without even asking her and then proceeds to ignore her giving her the cold shoulder, even telling himself that the secret she entrusted enough to tell him was all made up and she's nothing but a liar, that's when I started disliking his character, talk about double standards, it was stupid and a real downer after loving the story and character up till then.

Unfortunately after that I just wasn't interested in Nick or anything he thought or had to say, there was nothing he could have done to endear me to him after that, Scotty deserved so much better than him, and with the male lead unlikeable in my eyes, I struggled to finish the book and while I did get there in the end and to the cliffhanger, I'm not sure if I want to carry on with the series, once I dislike a main character I find it hard to enjoy the story, unfortunately what started off so well for me ended on a sour note because of Nick's actions and thoughts.

My rating is based on the first 74% of the book I enjoyed.

I give this 3/5 stars.

Book Review (477): Broken Juliet (Starcrossed #2) - Leisa Rayven

Broken Juliet (Starcrossed #2)

Publication: 1st May 2015
Publisher: Pan Macmillan
Pages: 320
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age Appropriate: New Adult

Cassie swore she'd never forgive Ethan for breaking her heart when they were in acting school years ago. He was her one great love, and when he refused to love her back, a part of her died forever...or so she thought. Now she and Ethan are sharing a Broadway stage, and he's determined to win her back. Finally he's able to say all the things she needed to hear years ago...but can she believe him? Has he really changed, and what makes this time different from all his other broken promises? The answer lies somewhere in the past, and now the truth will come to light.

Will Cassie rediscover what it's like to be trusting and open again-the way she was before Ethan? Or is it too late for these star-crossed lovers?

Don't miss this mesmerizing final chapter in the Bad Romeo duet, the unforgettable love story that captured the hearts of over two million fans online.
My Thoughts.
Broken Juliet is the second book in the Starcrossed series, picking up from the ending in Bad Romeo we finally get some understanding and closure to the rocky, heartbreaking and emotional love story of Ethan and Cassie.

Two soul-mates who endure a long and painful journey to find the happily ever after they both clearly deserve to find in one another, both drawn towards one another like moth's to a flame, no matter how much time goes by, you know they'll always find their way back to one another.

The character roles have been reversed in this book, in Bad Romeo Ethan is closed off, distrustful and feels unworthy of being loved, after suffering through two break-ups with Ethan, Cassie is now the same way, whilst Ethan finally got help for his problems and is in a far better place, now he's the one who is positive and sure of their relationship and what they could be together.

As per the first book we have two different timelines running throughout the story the present and the past of 6-5 years ago, giving the readers the story of their fledgling, floundering relationship and the choices good or bad that they made between them which brought them to where they are today.

I really enjoyed the way this storyline was wrapped up, the happiness I felt when I'd finally finished reading the book left me with a smile on my face and relief that Ethan and Cassie's story had ended in a way that I was really happy with.

If you're looking for an angsty contemporary romance read of the new adult persuasion then be sure to pick this series up, you can't go wrong.

I give this 4/5 stars.

Writing has always been a passion for Leisa, and even though she originally intended to be an actress, it wasn’t long into her time at drama school that she began writing plays.
Those plays were bad. Very bad. Well, her friends thought they were good, but that’s because they were always cast in them and any opportunity to be on stage was met with an obnoxious amount of enthusiasm.
Since then, she’s honed her craft, and several of her plays have been produced and toured
throughout Australia.
These days, playwriting has given way to fiction writing, and Leisa’s debut novel, BAD ROMEO, will be available in a worldwide release through Macmillan Publishing in December 2014.
Leisa lives in Australia with her husband, two little boys, three cats, and a kangaroo named Howard.
(Howard may or may not be her imaginary marsupial friend. Everyone should have one.)

Book Review (476): Focus (Exposure #2) - Annie Jocoby

Focus: Exposure Series Book Two

Publication: 1st April 2015
Publisher: Tobann Publications
Pages: 181
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age Appropriate: Adult

CJ Parker has been abducted by Albanian gangsters for reasons unknown. What is known is that, if Asher cannot find her in time, she will disappear forever.

Desperate to find her, Asher makes a sacrifice to gain the information that is needed to locate CJ. When this sacrifice comes to light, however, it could very well spell the end to his relationship with her.

Will Asher find CJ in time? And, if he does, can they survive the devastating secret sacrifice he made to find her?

My Thoughts.
Focus is the second book in the Exposure series, with a lot more action and suspense than it's predecessor, I flew through it in just one sitting, filled with twists and turns that left me unwilling to put it down for just one minute.

Set just days after the last book, C.J has been kidnapped by the Albanian mob who plan on selling her as a sex slave, Asher is determined to find her before she is sold, but finding her won't be easy and what he agrees to do to find out where she is being held will have massive ramifications that will continue on into the next book.

A major twist will send the storyline in a new direction that the reader will not expect, I for one didn't but I actually enjoyed it quite a lot, of course this book ends not with a cliffhanger so much but a situation that will leave readers hanging  as we await the outcome in the third and final book in the trilogy.

Annie's writing is such that the anticipation of what is going to happen throughout the story will leave you on tenterhooks with never a dull moment.

I recommend this series to people who love contemporary romance with a little something extra, simply a joy to read.

I give this 4/5 stars.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Photographer CJ Parker is a woman who has literally not gone outside for the past six months. She’s been hiding from the world, and from life, ever since an unimaginable tragedy forced her into seclusion.

On the one day where she decides to finally venture outside, she meets the mysterious billionaire, Asher Sloane. Dark-headed, magnetic, and gorgeous, Asher drips sex and animal magnetism. He draws CJ out of her shell and into the world, while showing her things that she never knew existed.

What CJ doesn’t know is that Asher has a dangerous past. Behind his beautiful blue eyes and confident demeanor lies dark secrets that, if they are brought to light, could mean the end of CJ and Asher’s relationship.

Will the exposure of Asher’s past destroy them?

My Thoughts.

I always enjoy reading romance books that feature a billionaire businessman and a heroine struggling to make ends meet, when there is a secret or some kind of tragedy involved so much the better, and we get all of that here in Exposure.

I was drawn to this book because of it's premise, C.J is agoraphobic after a tragedy that has left her housebound for the last six months, quickly running out of money she knows she needs to get back to work, she decides to venture outside but doesn't make it far before it becomes too much and she loses consciousness, when she comes to she finds herself in a strange apartment that just so happens to belong to billionaire hottie Asher Sloane, the attraction and chemistry between the two is evident from the start, Asher having known someone who suffers the same phobia as C.J tries to help out as much as he can.

While C.J is fast developing feelings for Asher and believes that theirs is the beginning of a new relationship, Asher makes a proposition to C.J to pretend to be his fiancee to be rid of his stalker ex-girlfriend, in return he'll give her $100,000, also letting her know that he is incapable of falling in love with anybody and she shouldn't expect anything more, C.J is insulted and refuses to have anything to do with Asher, but when she is in dire need of money she has no choice but to agree, it's not too long though before they both start falling in love with each other even Asher who swore that would never happen, but when a secret that Asher has been hiding comes to light will this be the end of their relationship?

With a shock of an ending that will leave you desperately wanting and needing the next book, this is one series that you'll have trouble putting down, full of suspense, drama, mystery and some really hot love scenes to boot this story will be sure to keep you on your toes.

Anie has written a  great start to a new series, that is sure to entertain and keep you enthralled from the get go.

I give this 4/5 stars.

(ARC) Book Review (474): Last Kiss (Hitman #3) - Jessica Clare & Jen Frederick

Last Kiss (Hitman #3)

Amazon Barnes & Noble
Through every new release in this series my adoration grows, if someone had told me that I would ever enjoy a series that focuses on hitmen and the women that tame them I would have laughed myself silly, but the thing is it works so goddamn well!

I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy reading Vasily's story, but being paired up with Naomi made for a story that had me laughing out loud at so many points throughout the book, kudos to Jessica and Jen for giving us a heroine who has Asperger's and highlights not only how their minds work but that they are still normal with just a few idiosyncrasies they have, the bluntness and weird, obscure and funny facts that Naomi rattles off sometimes at the most inoppurtune times made for an enjoyably entertaining read that has made Naomi one of my favorite female leads ever.

Vasily is struggling for control of the Russion Petrovich Bratva, for people to accept him as leader he is to hunt down and procure a Carragio painting that went missing from the Bratva many years ago, to do this he needs a hacker someone who is talented when it comes to do with anything and everything to do with computers and technology, so he hunts down the Emperor a well known and genius hacker who just so happens to be Naomi, and so starts the hilarious trek to find the painting, along the way both our protagonists who dislike to be touched Naomi because of her Asperger's and Vasily because of sexual abuse he suffered when he was younger both find that they have no problem with touching one another and so begins their uniquely entertaining relationship.

I can't seem to get enough of this series, these books are like drugs, I'm addicted and I don't see that ending anytime soon,

A wonderful addition to the Hitman series.

I give this 5/5/ stars.

This is a pen name for Jill Myles.
Jill Myles has been an incurable romantic since childhood. She reads all the 'naughty parts' of books first, looks for a dirty joke in just about everything, and thinks to this day that the Little House on the Prairie books should have been steamier.

After devouring hundreds of paperback romances, mythology books, and archaeological tomes, she decided to write a few books of her own - stories with a wild adventure, sharp banter, and lots of super-sexy situations. She prefers her heroes alpha and half-dressed, her heroines witty, and she loves nothing more than watching them overcome adversity to fall into bed together.

(ARC) Book Review (473): The Cage (The Cage #1) - Megan Shepherd

The Cage (The Cage #1)

Publication: 26th May 2015
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Pages: 400
Genre: Science Fiction
Age Appropriate: Young Adult
Buy It: Amazon • Barnes & Noble
The Maze Runner meets Scott Westerfeld in this gripping new series about teens held captive in a human zoo by an otherworldly race. From Megan Shepherd, the acclaimed author of The Madman's Daughtertrilogy.

When Cora Mason wakes in a desert, she doesn't know where she is or who put her there. As she explores, she finds an impossible mix of environments—tundra next to desert, farm next to jungle, and a strangely empty town cobbled together from different cultures—all watched over by eerie black windows. And she isn't alone.

Four other teenagers have also been taken: a beautiful model, a tattooed smuggler, a secretive genius, and an army brat who seems to know too much about Cora's past. None of them have a clue as to what happened, and all of them have secrets. As the unlikely group struggles for leadership, they slowly start to trust each other. But when their mysterious jailer—a handsome young guard called Cassian—appears, they realize that their captivity is more terrifying than they could ever imagine: Their captors aren't from Earth. And they have taken the five teenagers for an otherworldly zoo—where the exhibits are humans.

As a forbidden attraction develops between Cora and Cassian, she realizes that her best chance of escape might be in the arms of her own jailer—though that would mean leaving the others behind. Can Cora manage to save herself and her companions? And if so . . . what world lies beyond the walls of their cage?
My Thoughts.
I have been a huge fan of Megan's ever since I read The Madman's Daughter, when I first learnt about what this book was about I was beyond intrigued, The Cage has such a fresh and unique plot that was carried out in a way that was suspenseful, mysterious and heart-pounding.

Told in multiple perspectives with the emphasis on Cora as our main protagonist, she is joined by two other girls and three boys all strangers, finding themselves in a strange place, held captive in a menagerie by aliens known as the Kindred they are an experiment being tested and observed.

With rules to follow including procreation with their designated partner, Cora is determined to escape before she'll ever let that happen, with a connection to their alien caretaker Cassian who she finds herself developing feelings for, and with conflict being engineered by the Kindred between Cora and the other five over the favoritism that is more than evidently shown her way tensions are high, with threats of violence and constant fights breaking out some captives are close to the breaking point and are willing to do whatever it takes to get their way.

With a shocking twist that will leave you in disbelief and eager to get your grubby hands on the next book, this story is sure to entertain and keep you on the edge of you seat as we traverse this strange and unusual world where it's survival of the fittest.

Another outstanding read from Megan, definitely an auto-buy author for me, with a writing style that will at once enchant and captivate I recommend everybody check out her books.

Loved it!

I give this 5/5 stars.

(ARC) Book Review (472): A Shattered Moment (Fractured Lives #1) - Tiffany King

A Shattered Moment (Fractured Lives #1)

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age Appropriate: New Adult
Amazon | B&N | iBooks | Kobo | GooglePlay

n the new series by Tiffany King, the USA Today bestselling author of the Woodfalls Girls novels, six friends—fresh from high school graduation—discover that the future can come at you from out of nowhere.
This is Mackenzie’s story…

Mackenzie Wilson once had hope for what life had to offer, but everything changed on the night of her graduation. A year later, the only way she can find comfort is by keeping her head down and hoping she remains unnoticed at college.

When Bentley James discovered Mac in that twisted SUV, he was just a newbie EMT on his first call. It was a gut-wrenching moment that made him realize not everyone can be saved—and sometimes they don’t want to be.
A chance encounter on campus brings Bentley back into Mac’s life. Despite her initial resistance, he sets out to discover the girl hiding beneath a shield of seclusion. He evokes painful memories in Mac—but also feelings. As the spark between them grows, Mac must decide if she can let go of the past and believe in something as fragile as love…

My Thoughts.
Just from reading the synopsis of A Shattered Moment I knew I was going to love this book, having previously read and thoroughly enjoyed Tiffany's Woodfalls Girls series, I knew I was going to in for a treat.

What I find refreshing about this new adult book was that there were no secrets between our two main protagonists, usually we have to wait to discover the big reveal but not in this story, after a car accident that killed her friends and left her with a crippling leg injury that leaves her dependant on a cane, Mackenzie 'Mac' has shut herself off from interaction from everyone besides her parents, spending her time alone in her dorm room or venturing out to the campus library, that's where she runs into Bentley, but you see Bentley is no stranger to Mac, on his first job as a EMT he responded to the car acident that Mac was involved in, staying with her while she was trapped in the wreckage never leaving her side until she arrived at the hospital.

While initially shocked and taken aback by being face to face with a reminder of that tragic night where she lost so much and desperately wants to forget, Mac will find that Bentley will her bring her back to life, to start living again, and to help her come to terms with the accident that destroyed so many lives.

I liked the snippets of the night of the car accident interspersed throughot the story, as well as the alternate POV's of Mac and Bentley.

After the ending in this book I'm desperate for the second one, talk about leaving a person hanging.

Tiffany has written an enotionally heartbreaking yet uplifting story that is sure to touch you and leave an impact, well after you've turned the last page.

Another great addition to the new adult genre.

I give this 5/5 stars.
