Feature And Follow Friday (33).

Q: Jumping Genres: Ever pick up a book from a genre you usually don’t like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place.

I never really read straight up Fantasy books, but years ago back when I was in primary school we had a school fair and they were selling cheap books, having read everything in my house I picked this up and thought I'd give it a go, and I absolutely loved it!
All together there was 13 books including or to do with the series and I've read every one, and loved them all!

Pawn of Prophecy (The Belgariad #1)

Long ago, so the storyteller claimed, the evil God Torak sought dominion over all and drove the world to war. Now the one talisman keeping this sinister force from seizing power has been disturbed—and no one will be safe. . . .
Raised on a quiet farm by his Aunt Pol, Garion spends his days lounging in his aunt’s warm kitchen and playing in the surrounding fields with his friends. He has never believed in magic, despite the presence of a cloaked, shadowless stranger who has haunted him from a distance for years. But one afternoon, the wise storyteller Wolf appears and urges Garion and his aunt to leave the farm that very night. Without understanding why, Garion is whisked away from the only home he has ever known—and thrown into dark and unfamiliar lands.

Thus begins an extraordinary quest to stop a reawakened evil from devouring all that is good. It is a journey that will lead Garion to discover his heritage and his future. For the magic that once seemed impossible to Garion is now his destiny.

(ARC) Book Review (106) Innocent Darkness - Suzanne Lazear

Innocent Darkness (The Aether Chronicles #1)

I loved Noli, she's a strong female character who helped look after her mother after her father disappeared and her brother is away working, but being set in 1901 females aren't expected to work and so Noli's mother is frowned upon for owning and working in her dress shop to support them both.
Noli likes to fix mechanical things and gardening, and with the help of her best friend Steven 'V' manages to get them both into a lot of trouble, none more so than when she fixes up her dad's old car and takes it out flying, Noli doesn't have a license and since she's already been in trouble with the police before when she get's stopped by the police this time they show no leniency and sentence Noli to a reform school 'Finlay House.
But not all is what it seems there, the facade that Miss Gregory presents when Noli is brought to the school by her mother and their local policeman hides a lot of abuse and torture plus a male doctor who shows a bit too much attention to the girls, 'good girls' get treated better but to be them you almost become mindless drones.
Noli makes friends with Charlotte and together they help each other through their time in Finlay House, Noli gets to spend her time gardening where she finds a faery garden hidden away unbeknown to her what it is, it isn't until Charlotte is taken away by her abusive uncle and Noli is tortured again that she finds solace in the 'faery tree' where she wishes to be anywhere but there that she ends up in the Otherworld.
Keveighn the Huntsmen who has been hunting for a mortal girl with the 'spark' (someone who has a lot of creativity) finds her in the Otherworld and takes her back to his cabin, where he falls in love with her.
The land relied on the blood sacrifice every seven mortal years to nourish her and keep the magic alive
Noli starts to develop feelings too until she finds out the truth of why she's really there and what Keveighn's job really is, V comes to rescue Noli and it seems that Keveighn isn't the only one keeping secrets, V has been hiding something big from her.
Through it all the only thing that Noli wants is to go home to her mother.
"For reasons unbeknownst to me, I could easily fall for you, if I let myself-even though I know better."
I loved the ending, it was a bit of a shock and I really can't wait to find out what occurs next in Noli's life.
I give this 4/5.

The Casual Vacancy
by
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?

A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J. K. Rowling’s first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

Book Review (105) Sweet Venom - Tera Lynn Childs

Sweet Venom (Medusa Girls #1)

Publication: 6th September 2011
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Pages: 345
Genre: Fantasy/Mythology
Age Appropriate: Young Adult
Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they're triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.
My Thoughts.
I loved this book, I finished it in less than a day and that's a definite sign to me how much I liked because I didn't want to put it down.
I loved how the myth of Medusa was used in a different way, and that in this story she was never bad it was just a rumor started by Athena because she was jealous, Medusa stopped all the mythological beings from stepping foot into our world with her two sisters Sthenno and Euryale, and all her female descendants after her would take on this job three girls in each generation, each bestowed with a different  gift that they also inherited from Medusa and her sisters.
Hydras have a distinctive odor
From the first line I was intrigued, I didn't really know what a Hydra was at the time but I'm certainly learning a lot of all the mythological creatures that there are.
As all the chapters are alternated between the triplets Gretchen, Grace and Greer and I like how we get a glimpse into their lives and the families that they were adopted out too, we start with Gretchen on the first chapter, as she tracks down the said Hydra from the first line and sends it back from where it came from, Gretchen didn't have the best adoptive parents and chose to run away.
I didn't ask for awful, selfish parents who liked to hit me when the drink and drugs ran out
She was found by Ursula an older lady who knew about Gretchen's destiny and helped her to train to be able to fight the creatures, and that's what she's been doing for the last four years since she was twelve.
Then we have Grace who can't stick up for herself but is an incredibly nice person with great parents and an adopted older brother Thane.
The mom and dad and brother I love more than anything and who love me back just as much
And finally Greer who doesn't appear in the book until about halfway through, she was adopted by a rich couple who are too busy with their work to pay Greer any attention.
I reconciled myself long ago to the fact that my parents aren't the demonstrative, caring, supportive type
They all eventually find each other first Gretchen and Grace, Gretchen who is training Grace after Ursula goes missing, then they find out that they're triplets not twins like they first thought and they track down Greer who is not interested in anything they have to say and thinks that their stories about Medusa are all made up and that they're both crazy, until she spots one herself that is.
Gretchen's mentor Ursula goes missing, there's a bounty out on the girls' heads and through all that they also have boy problems.
I don't want to get into it any further and wreck the story but I hope you check this book out, I look forward to the next book Sweet Shadows out in September, and I'll leave you with some of my favourite quotes.

Favourite Quotes.
I sigh, "No Such luck." "Trying to will yourself bigger boobs?'
"Next time I'll lend you the fifty cents." "Save it for your implants fund." Vail flashes a sympathetic look at Miranda's less-than-overflowing chest
"How about a pen?' "What?' I blurt. "Forget you were coming to school today?' "Something like that."
"Are you deficient?' I ask, "What about me has ever said, 'Yes, please keep hitting on me'?'
 I give this book 4/5.

Book Review (104). The Half-Breed Vampire - Theresa Meyers

The Half-Breed Vampire (Sons of Midnight #3)

Publication: 21st February 2012
Publisher: Harlequin
Pages: 288
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age Appropriate: Adult

Ignorant of his true heritage, half-breed Slade Donovan is fated to feel like an outsider among his clan. Until a mysterious woman arrives with the ability to unlock his secrets—and make him crave a future he never believed he could have….As a game warden, Raina Ravenwing has only one mission in the Cascade Mountains: to hunt down a pack of rare wolves that is terrorizing her tribe. Her instant attraction to Slade is a distraction the beautiful wolf whisperer can't afford, unless she agrees to let him help her. Yet working so closely together only intensifies their passion…even as the unfolding truth of Slade's identity threatens everything Raina holds sacred.
My Thoughts.
I've long been a fan of Mills & Boon/Harlequin books, I remember when I was a teenager I used to read all of my Mum's old one's and they used to be all I ever read and then for reasons unknown I stopped reading them, then after Twilight I got into the paranormal genre and was delighted to find that Harlequin had moved along with me and released the Nocturne series all to do with every paranormal creature that you could imagine, and I soon started collecting them and I'm glad to say that I haven't read a bad book in the series since.
This book is the third book in the Sons Of Midnight series, I didn't realise until I started reading it that I had obviously not read the first two books.
So while I did feel like I may have missed out on some important information to do with the specific storyline and the lore of the vampires and werewolves, it was still an enjoyable story.
The story starts with Slade a vampire tracking werewolves in the forest when he comes across Raina a police officer, after wiping her memory he is surprised when he finds her at work the next day and he is told that they are partnering up to investigate some missing people and the appearance of wolves, being the best tracker around Slade helps her to find out what is going on.
Slade who has no memory of his life before he was eight and found homeless will find out about his  history, the fact that Raina knows who his parents are and the connection she has to Slade's past.
I really liked that the vampires in this story are different from others I read about and it gave the vampire lore a fresh twist.
I will definitely be seeking out the previous book in the series to find out what I've missed.
I give this 4/5.

Blog Tour: Gone At Zero Hundred Hours 00:00 - C.R Hiatt

I am participating in the virtual blog tour for Gone At Zero Hundred Hours 00:00 Today.
Blurb.

"Their lives are in the hands of two 18 year-olds..."

Sydney Marie McSwain - a tomboy who yearned for a father.

Cody Beck - a wannabe filmmaker, wisenheimer and flirt.

Jaden White - the star who led the high school hockey team to two championships, and was now on the A-list for NHL scouts.

Sydney Marie McSwain loves her mom, Anna - a private investigator in the coastal city where they live - but they had a major issue between them. Anna refused to give Sydney the identity of her father. On the day of her high school graduation, they were battling it out, once again. An hour later, Sydney, Cody and Jaden were at the local café, and watched as Anna was gunned down.

Faced with immediate responsibility, Sydney and Cody agreed to take over the agency, only they changed the name to McSwain & Beck. At the same time, Sydney convinced Sutter Beach Detective, Ace Carter, to help her track down her father.

Then out of the blue, a model walked in and hired them to follow her step-brother. While Cody was busy editing a trailer to solicit new clients, Sydney settled into her lemon-yellow pickup to do surveillance, and wound up staking out a secret club called The Devil’s Door whose suspicious members wore the tattoo of a devil.

That same night, Sydney received a call from one of her mom’s former clients, but the client was gunned down at the location where they agreed to meet. The mysterious discovery of a DVD revealed the possibility that teenagers were being abducted, only nobody reported them missing.

On the hunt for the victims, McSwain & Beck were chased by men in ski masks, nearly gunned down by a members of a drug cartel called the outlaws, Sydney’s precious pickup was broken into; then the step-brother they were hired to follow, was found dead and Sydney was the number one suspect.

If things weren’t bad enough already, they had to figure out how to crash a red-carpet Mardi Gras bash being held on a private cruise ship, before it sailed off into the sunset, where they just might meet the devil, himself.

Now, the clock was ticking…

And time was running out…

How was she ever going to find her father, now?

Excerpt.
Then, a guy who called himself, J.C., pulled up to the firehouse on a juiced up Harley
Davidson claiming to be her attorney.I met up with him outside when I heard the sound of the
exhaust. He took off his skull and bones helmet, and followed me into the firehouse wearing a
leather vest and a pair of chaps. I thought he looked more like a member of the Sons of Anarchy,
and found myself wondering if he wore his get up when he faced a judge in court.
"As I said on the phone", he started as he followed me inside.
"I was hired by your mother to take care of her personal affairs". He glanced around the firehouse with admiration; then offered
a handshake to Jaden and Cody who were there for support.
In the old days, the fire trucks sat in the bay just inside the firehouse garage doors. Now, it
was where my mom set up the office. There was a desk with chairs, a wall of filing cabinets, and
a mechanical bull-riding machine. Yes, you read that right, a bull-riding machine. One thing my
mom and I did like to do together I was check out the local  flea markets. You could find the
coolest things. My mom said the mechanical bull was better than a treadmill any day. A couple
minutes a day and you were sure to wind up with six-pack abs. She bought it and I was hooked.
To the right, there was a locker room cluttered with old turnout gear, fire boots and helmets
that were left over from volunteer firemen. A small dispatch office with an alarm box sat just
inside the front door, and a set of stairs led to the second  floor - the living quarters.
J.C. pulled a stack of papers out of a leather satchel then we all sat around the desk. For the
next hour, he read through the contents of my mom's will, and informed me of my financial
responsibilities from now on. He also confirmed something I knew, but had never seen the
physical proof - until now.
My mom received a cashier's check from an 'unknown individual' on the first of every month. He said the checks would continue until I turned twenty - one. I knew they were from my father, but I still couldn't understand why his identity
was such a big secret.
Listening to J.C. ramble on and on about my new responsibilities, I wanted to crawl into bed,
pull the covers over my head and dream it all away, but that wasn't an option. I had to grow up,
and fast.
