Book Review (195): The Bridegroom Wore Plaid (MacGregor Trilogy #1) - Grace Burrowes

The Bridegroom Wore Plaid (MacGregor Trilogy #1)

Publication: 1st December 2012

Genre: Historical Romance
Age Appropriate: Adult
His Family or His Heart -- One of Them Will Be Betrayed...

Ian MacGregor is wooing a woman who's wrong for him in every way. As the new Earl of Balfour, though, he must marry an English heiress to repair the family fortunes.

But in his intended's penniless chaperone, Augusta, Ian is finding everything he's ever wanted in a wife.
My Thoughts...
I am a huge fan of historical romance books add in a family of sexy, virile scottish guys and you have the makings of a fantastic novel which is what this book turned out to be.
The new Earl of Balfour Ian MacGregor has arranged to get married, in need of money to help upkeep his home and support his family he has agreed to marry Genie, who's father is only interested in his daughter gaining a title, not her happiness.
Genie's cousin and chaperone Augusta, whom at her age is considered a spinster catches Ian's eye, and he hers but they both know that for different reasons they cannot be together.
We also see romances developing between Ian's two brother's Gil and Con and a couple of the guests, I kind of guessed who the final couples were going to be at the start of the book but it was a funny and entertaining ride getting there.
We also have the Baron (Genie's father) commiting some dastardly deeds to make sure that Augusta is out of the picture for good, as well as the offences he commited after the death of her parents wich may or may not see the light of day.
I really liked the way that this book was written so that every character had their own pov's throughout, it added a bit extra to the story being able to understand where everybody was coming from.
I look forward to continuing on with series with the next book featuring Hector (Genie's younger sister), a fantastic addition to the historical romance genre.
I give this 5/5.

Book Review (194): Deliver Me From Temptation (Paladin Warriors #2) - Tes Hilaire

Deliver Me from Temptation (Paladin Warriors #2)

Publication: 4th December 2012
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Pages: 346
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age Appropriate: Adult
Logan Calhoun is the last full-blooded Paladin, the future leader of a race of immortal warrior angels. The heavy responsibility of continuing the Paladin line falls to him, and the last thing he should do is get involved with a human. Then fate throws Jessica Waters, a homicide detective who doesn't believe in fate or divine intervention, into his path. Her devotion lies in her Glock and a good set of handcuffs. Like Logan, she's a warrior for her people, and she awakens within him something he'd never thought he'd feel. But she's also as human as they come...
My Thoughts...
This is a great instalment to the Paladin Warriors series, this book is Logan's story and his involvement with a human police officer Jessica.
One night while out patrolling he comes across Jessica while she is waiting for an informant, after coming face to face with the creatures that go bump in the night he has to erase her memory of that incident, so when they meet again the next day she doesn't remember him but she feels like she's met him before.
Logan soon discovers that Jessica is his bond mate but the knowledge that she is mortal and he'll one day have to watch her die stops him from starting a relationship with her but instead resorts to following her around which she soon discovers and thinks that he's nothing more than a stalker.
And with Jessica investigating a case that only seems to put her in danger Logan is more determined than ever to keep her safe and out of trouble, but that is easier said than done when trouble seems to find her wherever she is.
We get some glimpses of Roland and Karissa and what they are up too and Valin whom was a favourite of mine from the first book and I'm hoping that his book is next, and with the mention of Gabbie I'm extremely excited as these two belong together.
I'm really happy with where this series is going and I look forward to continuing on with this series and all those other Paladin warriors, if you haven't read this series yet, pick it up and give it a go.
I give this 4/5.

Feature And Follow Friday.

Q: WHAT BOOK DO YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD READ? IF YOU COULD GIFT THE ENTIRE POPULATION WITH ONE BOOK?

Well normally I would say the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, but for something different I will suggest a book from a genre that I was never really a fan of before this year (contemporary/romance) and that is: Beautiful Disaster - Jamie McGuire, I highly recommend this book to everybody!
I love me some Travis Maddox.

Book Review (193): Deliver Me From Darkness (Paladin Warriors #1) - Tes Hilaire

Deliver Me from Darkness (Paladin Warriors #1)

Publication: 7th February 2012
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Pages: 323
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age Appropriate: Adult
A STRANGER IN THE NIGHT...

He had once been a warrior of the Light, one of the revered Paladin. A protector. But now he lives in darkness, and the shadows are his sanctuary. Every day is a struggle to overcome the bloodlust. Especially the day Karissa shows up at his doorstep.

COMES KNOCKING ON THE DOOR

She is light and bright and everything beautiful—despite her scratches and torn clothes. Every creature of the night is after her. So is every male Paladin. Because Karissa is the last female of their kind. But she is his. He may not have a soul, but he can't deny his heart.
My Thoughts...
I really loved this book and the world that Tes has created, the band of warriors that form the Paladins all seem extremely intriguing and I can't wait to read more books in this series about the other warriors.

Roland was once a Paladin warrior, but after being tricked he was unwillingly turned into a vampire, and so he has mostly shut himself away from society, apart from night time when he is out fighting the vampires, demons and merkers, he is still loyal to the Paladins although they don't extend the same courtesy to him anymore.

His only friend left of the warriors is Logan, he is the son of the Paladin leader and one of the last pure line of Angels, and his Father and the other Paladin's believe that Logan killed Roland 94 years ago.

One night Logan brings a woman named Karissa to his apartment and leaves her there, of course once she wakes up and discovers that Roland is a vampire she's not exactly happy and tries to escape, what ensues had me laughing to myself, Roland who had just gotten his apartment the way he liked it everything new and clean, is destroyed by Karissa while he slept, but he discovers that she is not exactly human by the way she can transport herself from place to place and that she is the only remaining Paladin female left and he realises that she is also his bond mate.

As with all books in the paranormal genre we have our main baddie, in this book we have a few Christos who was the vampire that turned Roland, Ganelon a former Paladin who went rogue after the death of his mate years before and they both work for Lucifer himself.

There are quite are a couple of characters in this book that I felt stole the show as it were, Valin a Paladin warrior and Gabrielle 'Gabbie' another vampire that Christos turned who is friends with Roland and refuses to drink blood until Christos forces her too, I have a feeling that both Valin and Gabbie will end up together in future books and I think I know who Gabbie's father is and I hope it's not long till we discover who that is.

I loved this book and I look forward to the next book in the series.

I give this 4/5.

Blog Tour: Stones To Ashes (The Alchemists Academy #1), Elemental Explosions (The Alchemists Academy #2) - Kailin Gow, Book Review (191) & (192).

Tour Schedule

The Alchemists Academy Book 1: Stones to Ashes by Kailin Gow
Publication: 7th January 2011
Publisher: The Edge
Pages: 198
Genre: Fantasy
Age Appropriate: Young Adult

What do you learn here...at the Academy? Wirt asks. Magic? The responsibility to use your powers responsibly? Uh...something like that, his roommate Spencer said. More like how to rule worlds. Wirt, is used to being shuffled from foster home to foster home, adopting a devil-may-care attitude toward the world along the way. Now he s in a school he can t escape, learning to develop his latent magical abilities, for what use, he doesn't know...to save his world or to destroy it...
My Thoughts...
The Alchemist's Academy is another winning series for Kailin Gow.

Every series that I've read so far has such different characters and storylines, and I always love delving into a new book to see what new and exciting world Kailin has come up with.

This time we have Wirt (a very unique name and a nice change having a male protagonist) who discover's he has magical abilities after he 'accidentally' transports himsefl to a school for magical children, but don't mistake this for a Harry Potter knock-off, the basis for the magic in this story is the legend of King Arthur and Merlin.

With the help of his roommate Spencer, Alana (the girl that they both have a crush on) and Miss Lake (a well known person from the Arthurian legend) the try to find an Urn which is a magical artifact stolen from the school, and not a good thing to fall into the wrong hands.

I really liked the descriptions of the school and all the different magical subjects that the students can enrol in.
A really fun, fast paced read, now onto the next one.

I give this 4/5.

The Alchemists Academy Book 2: Elemental Explosions by Kailin Gow
Publication: 25th July 2011
Publisher: The Edge
Pages: 220
Genre: Fantasy
Age Appropriate: Young Adult

A new student has entered The Alchemists Academy, and he brings with him an explosive power that threatens the Academy and the legend of Merlin. Wirt thought he was the only bad boy at the Academy, but he was wrong. Not only is Roland Black worse than Wirt, but a new teacher had replaced one of their beloved teachers, and she has more planned for Wirt and his friends than just lesson plans. Alana, his crush has grown prettier, and now he is rivals for her attention with not only his best friend Spencer, but newcomer Roland, as well. On top of that, it is their second year, and the year where all the students must pass a test to move on to the Elite Class at the Academy. The Elite Class is the only class in the third year at the Academy, and the students who fail will be sent home, others will face something even deadlier.
My Thoughts...
The second instalment in the series finds Wirt with a new roommate, new kid Roland Black who isn't very friendly towards Wirt or Spencer but seems very interested in spending time with Alana.

Wirt feels that there is something that Roland is hiding but he can't quite put his finger on it until one night in their dorm room he hears Roland having a conversation with someone about what his plans are while he's at the school and it's not good, but with Alana infatuated with him and Wirt and Spencer not spending that much time together Wirt is determined to find out what's going on with Roland himself.

And if that wasn't enough to keep Wirt on his toes, the Headmaster announces that exams will begin to pick the fourteen students who will commence into the Elite class next year, whoever doesn't make it will be sent home.

The ending of this book was frustrating only for the fact of the way we were kept hanging, I need to get my hands on the third book, this was definitely my favourite of the two books so far and I look forward to continuing on to see what happens next.

Another Kailin Gow series highly recommended.

I give this 4/5.
